Why is this train carriage so significant in World War One?

Does this help you to decide?

Or this – how it looks today?

A French commander was ordered to find a secluded spot where two trains could meet – he found a place called the Forest of Compiegne On 8 November 1918, a German train and French train pulled up within 100 metres of each other The Germans stepped out of their train, expecting to get into the French carriage But first the French gave the Germans a 10-hour ‘scenic’ tour of devastated French land They then returned to the railway carriages What would happen next?

Armistice – Germany surrenders What is happening here? Armistice – Germany surrenders 1918

Weapons - tank War at sea For each one you need 3 precise pieces of detail to support it 1 2 3 Weapons - tank War at sea This is supposed to be a quick recap lesson to help the students recall / reflect on all of the reasons why the Allies eventually won the war – and hence the multitude of reasons that compelled Germany to sign. You could get them working in groups on one reason each, creating a class wall chart to summarise. Big reasons can include: weapons and tactics, war at sea, America, Russia / the Eastern Front, Allied leadership (plus others you might have taught your class). It leads directly into the Cont. Asses. Question – so don’t spend too long on this activity… Get into the all-important lessons on writing.

War at sea Weapons - Tank

War at sea Tank Now look through the sources, they are split into the sections already. Step 1. Highlight key phrases or parts of the sources that are relevant Step 2. Label them with their key argument. What do they suggest caused Germany to sign?

Does your success criteria look like this? Describe a source that supports your argument Are there any other sources to back it up? Use your own precise knowledge to support the source Overall how strong is the argument of the source?
