IDENTIFYING NOUN CONCRETE AND ABSTRACT NOUN SINGULAR AND PLURAL NOUNS Noun (part 1) IDENTIFYING NOUN CONCRETE AND ABSTRACT NOUN SINGULAR AND PLURAL NOUNS

IDENTIFYING NOUN Nouns are commonly defined as words that refer to a person, place, thing, or idea. For example: Chair Computer Farmer Book Pen Watch Lecturer Money Table Singer Jacket Hat Box Woman Stick Eraser

Exercise 1 Which of the following words are nouns? Tree When Beds Glass Said 6. Slowly 7. Factory 8. Ticket 9. Boxes 10. Almost

Exercise 2 Underline the nouns in the phrases. Your red sweater Those boxes A few men Their carpets Many photos 6. His very interesting article 7. Two interesting museums My white bag On Facebook The car in the garage

Concrete and abstract noun Here’s an unusual sentence: He smelled the marriage. What makes this sentence unusual is that we don’t generally think of the noun marriage as something that can be smelled. Some nouns are concrete: they can be perceived by senses – they are things that we can see, smell, taste, or touch. Those nouns are not concrete, but abstract. Marriage is something abstract, so it’s odd to say it’s being perceived by one of our senses, our sense of smell. Abstract nouns are nouns that we cannot perceive with our senses.

Exercise 3 Decide if each noun is concrete or abstract.

SINGULAR AND PLURAL NOUNS What’s the difference between cat and cats? The noun cat is used when it refers to only one cat; its form is singular. The noun cats is used when it represents more than one cat; its form is plural. Thus, the singular and plural forms tell us about number.

Exercise 4 Underline each noun in the sentence and indicate whether it is singular or plural: He had a few good ideas. The boys spoke to the women. My neighbour is a neuorologist. Many students are living in a dormitory Those five sheep are mine.
