Useful Study Tips Mnemonics Quizlet Try your best to use the words

Approbation POS: Noun Definition: the expression of approval or favorable opinion; praise Synonym: sanction Antonyms: disapproval, condemnation, censure Approbation-think of your favorite app. You probably like and approve of it.

Assuage POS: Verb Definition: to make easier or milder, relieve; to quiet, calm, to put an end to, appease, satisfy, quench Sentence: I do yoga to assuage my stress from school. Assuage think Massage

Coalition POS: Noun Definition: a combination, union, or merger for some specific purpose Sentence: The Avengers formed a coalition to save the world from destruction. If you break it down, the prefix co means the same thing as it does in combination. The latter half of the word reminds me of align. When two or more things co-align, they come together and form a coalition.

Decadence POS: Noun Definition: decline, decay or deterioration; a condition or period of decline or decay; excessive self- indulgence The Deca part of the word sounds like “decay.” Decay is a synonym for decadence.

Elicit POS: Verb Definition: to draw forth, bring out from some source Synonyms: evoke, extract, educe Antonyms: repress, quash, squelch, stifle Sentence: She's been unable to elicit much sympathy from the public.

Expostulate PSO: Verb Definition: to attempt to dissuade someone from some course or decision by earnest reasoning Synonyms: protest, remonstrate, complain If you think someone has faulty logic, you might to try to expose their poor reasoning. You might protest them.

Hackneyed POS: Adjective Definition: used so often as to lack freshness or originality Antonyms: new, fresh, novel, original My 12th grade teacher was Miss. Hackney. She had an outdated approach to learning, and never did anything new, fresh, or original.

Hiatus POS: Noun Definition: a gap, opening, break (in the sense of having an element missing) Split it as HI+AT+US.....if anyone says 'Hi' on the way, we will definitely stop for a while.

Innuendo POS: Noun Definition: a hint, indirect suggestion, or reference (often in a derogatory sense) You go for a stay in an INN but U END up washing kitchen utensils...what does it imply? you had no money to pay!!

Intercede POS: Verb Definition: to plead on behalf of someone else; to save as a third party or go- between in a disagreement Synonyms: intervene, intermediate Intercede intervene go-between Origin: Late 16th century: from French intercéder or Latin intercedere ‘intervene’, from inter- ‘between’ + cedere ‘go.’ BLAME THE FRENCH!!

Jaded POS: Adjective Definition: wearied, worn-out, dulled (in the sense of being satiated by excessive indulgence) jaded sounds like faded.. which means wearied, worn-out, dulled

lurid POS: Adjective Definition: causing shock, horror, or revulsion; sensational; pale or sallow in color; terrible or passionate in intensity or lack of restraint lurid ~ horrid ; horrid , horrifying .. somewhat the same

Meritorious POS: Adjective Definition: worthy, deserving recognition and praise This just sounds like a fancy word that is worth and deserving of such a title.

Petulant POS: Adjective Definition: peevish, annoyed by trifles; easily irritated and upset The pet - u - lent me is getting me irritated

Prerogative POS: Noun Definition: a special right or privilege; a special quality showing excellence

Provincial Adjective: pertaining to an outlying area; local; narrow in mind or outlook, countrified; backward; of a simple plain design that originated in the countryside Noun: A person with a narrow point of view; a person from an outlying area; a soldier from a province or colony

Simulate POS: Verb Definition: to make a pretense of, imitate; to show the outer signs of SIMULATE and EMULATE which are rhyming words also have similar meanings, i.e to imitate or copy.

Transcend POS: Verb Definition: to rise above or beyond; exceed Synonyms: surpass T(top) Ran(running race) ascend(exceed), that is topping in running race, overtaking other runners

Umbrage POS: Noun Definition: shade cast by trees; foliage giving shade; an overshadowing influence or power; offense, resentment; a vague suspicion It almost looks like umbrella
