Perry Speech and Debate What You Need to Know

You need to choose your events Next tournament is a practice tournament on September 17

Here are the choices -Public Forum Debate -Lincoln Douglas -Humorous Interpretation -Dramatic Interpretation -Original Oratory -Expository -Prose -Poetry *If you want to do any other events, you must be discuss it beforehand with Ms. Jones and the officers

Fees -Handout lists all fees -Tax credit can be used for club fees -Club fees are used for: buses, any tournament fees to compete, NSDA membership, diploma seals, briefs -We need to vote on membership to the National Speech and Debate Association. This is mandatory if we want to compete.

Briefs -Briefs are documents with evidence and explanations of the evidence for each topic. Debaters use them to help them write cases. -We need to vote on briefs for Public Forum Debate and Lincoln-Douglas. -The total for both year-long packages is $100.

Dress Code Males: -Suit and tie/bowtie -Ties can be colorful -Dress shirt with undershirt -Dress shoes Females: -Pantsuit/Skirt suit -Nice blouse -Heels or nice flats. Heels are highly recommended. If you bring heels, bring flats to walk around in Both: -Neutral suit colors (Please, loud colors are tacky and lame) -Briefcase or professional bag to carry stuff (Mostly for Debaters) -Neat, pinned/gelled/ brushed hair (Just don’t have messy hair)

Tournament Format Saturdays: -IEs rounds start at 8:00am. Be at Perry to take bus at 6:30am -Generally 3 rounds of IEs -Then, lunch break for an hour near noon. Food available -If debaters break, they arrive around this time -Breaks for IE semifinals posted -IE semifinals. If not participating, watch an event -IE finals/Debate finals -Debate outrounds are also posting and going at the same time as IE outrounds Tournament Format Fridays: -Skip 6th, sometimes 5th period to go to tournament. Go to tournament on bus -Generally four rounds of debate -Breaks (making it to the next round) posted sometime after the rounds but before Saturday debate rounds -Usually ends anywhere from 8-11pm -Food is available
