Before cutting out their words, students will… Open their word study notebook to the next clean page Title that page with the sort number and the name of that weeks sort Write a simple list of all of their words 3. Finally they will cut out their sort and put it into their baggie/envelope *** While this is happening, Teacher will meet with each group to talk about their sort for the week. ***

Teacher will meet with Yellow Group on Tuesdays for Follow-up Class Work Schedule - Tuesday Students will partner up with another student in their group. They get their words out and can choose from a few buddy sorting activities. Blind Sort Speed Sort Race Concentration *Sort descriptions can be found on the inside cover of your notebook. Teacher will meet with Yellow Group on Tuesdays for Follow-up

Teacher will meet with Green Group on Wednesday mornings for Follow-up Class Work Schedule - Wednesday There is no schedule Word Study Time on Wednesdays. However, students are allowed to practice their sorts and maybe catch up on some homework during their free time. Teacher will meet with Green Group on Wednesday mornings for Follow-up

Teacher will meet with Orange Group on Thursdays for Follow-up Class Work Schedule - Thursday Students will complete a “Draw & Write” Activity with at least 10 of their words. *Draw & Label: Draw a picture and write a sentence to show me you know what that word means. Teacher will meet with Orange Group on Thursdays for Follow-up

Teacher will meet with Blue Group on Friday Morning for Follow-up Class Work Schedule - Friday Students will complete a “Draw & Write” Activity with at least 10 of their words. *Draw & Label: Draw a picture and write a sentence to show me you know what that word means. Teacher will meet with Blue Group on Friday Morning for Follow-up

Homework Policy There are four homework activities that students must complete throughout the week. Once students get their new list, they can start their homework. Parents need to sign/initial each homework assignment as the child completes it. ALL in-class work and homework should be completed in word study notebooks. All work from the week will be turned in & checked on Friday. If a student has done all of their work for the week, they will earn extra recess of Friday. If they do not complete their work for the week, they will stay in until it is completed.

Homework Policy Continued If a student is absent, they should still be able to do their work because all of my students know they should bring their notebook and words home every night. However, I do allow extra days to complete any work if you are absent if you need it.

Homework Activities Here are the 4 activities and their descriptions: SAW (Sort, Alphabetize and Write) - Students sort their words, alphabetize the words within their categories, and then write down the sort in their notebook. (Estimated time – 20 Minutes)   Word Hunt - Students look for 10 words in books that fit the rule/pattern. Words are recorded in their Words Their Way notebook. (Estimated time – 10 minutes) Speed Sort – Students time themselves 3 times sorting their list and writing their times in their Word Study Notebook. (Estimated time – 10 Minutes) Beat the Parent-Parent sorts the words while being timed by their child. The child then tries to beat the parent’s time while sorting their words. (Estimated time – 10 Minutes)

Spelling Tests On Friday, our word study time is from 1:10-1:40. During that time all students will take their spelling test over their list from that week. While other groups are being tested, I allow students to read or study for their test. Each Test will consist of 15 Words. The first 5 words will be review words from old lists (to ensure retention). The next 3 words are words that were not on the list but follow the same spelling pattern/rule. The last 7 words come straight from their sort words from the week.
