Columbus Day Instead of celebrating Columbus Day. Let us remember the Indigenous people of the Americas Pick three tribes you see on the map, one for each region. Look up information about them Who were they? What are they known for doing (culture)? Where did they lived (State)? When did they interact with Europeans? Why did they allow the Europeans to settle? How did they lived (daily life)? Note: The Six Nations: Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Seneca and Tuscarora. 

Activity: Sequencing Directions: Read Ch. 3, Lesson 1 “Mystery of Roanoke” (pg. 66-67) In a sheet of paper name and locate the first English colony in North America. Sequence (in chronological order) the main events in the colony's short history. After you are done we will construct a class timeline. Settlement at Roanoke Sir Walter Raleigh persuades Queen Elizabeth to set up colonies in North America. Why did I think a settlement in North America would be good for England?

Answer: Raleigh thought that the Queen would be interested in North America’s resources, especially its timber supply. North America had: * Good harbors * Plenty of timber to make ships * It was all FREE!

Roanoke : “The LOST Colony” 1585—First settlers arrived at Roanoke (off of the coast of North Carolina), but return to England. Food grew short and they quarrel with local Indians. 1587—John White (artist) and a second group of settlers established the colony again. John White (colony leader) was sent back to England. 1590 – White returns from England, but all of Roanoke’s settlers are gone. Their disappearance is still a mystery.

Jamestown Colony (Virginia) Years later, Englishmen asked King James for a charter—a document which allows people to form a colony

The Virginia Company James I gives the Virginia Company a charter. Virginia company was a joint-stock company—investors bought shares (part ownership). - Investors hoped that the company will make money and they would make profit.

This charter allows them to settle north of Roanoke between North Carolina and the Potomac River.

Malaria Jamestown Location 1607 – Jamestown is built in Virginia near Chesapeake Bay along the James River. Unfortunately, it is built in a swampy area full of mosquitoes. What disease is spread by mosquitoes? Malaria

Starvation & Recovery The first years of settlement was difficult because colonists argued all the time Captain John Smith takes over. Settlers are too interested in gold. He sets up strict rules, including a new work-to-eat policy. He visits nearby Indian tribes to trade for food.

The “Starving Times” Smith leaves the Jamestown colony and it begins to falter again. In 1612, the settlers of Jamestown begin to grow tobacco and it becomes a huge economic success. Tobacco becomes very popular in England. It becomes Jamestown’s CASH CROP, making the settlement lots of money.

More Settlers Come to Jamestown The Virginia Company gives a headright, or land grant—gives 50 acres of land to settlers who paid their own way to the colony. Women Women helped to make the colony more settled. They could not vote. They made everything from scratch. Africans First Africans arrive in Virginia in 1619. Colonists valued them for their agricultural skills.

Jamestown Becomes a “Royal Colony” The Virginia Company allows colonists to take part of government. Colonists choose burgesses (representatives) The House of Burgesses becomes the first congress in North America elected by people The Virginia Company could not make any profit, so King James takes over the colony and makes it a royal colony.

Reasons for Jamestown’s Success Go back and re-read Ch. 3, Lesson 1 Identify four reasons why Jamestown was a successful colony. 1. 2. 3. 4. What type of government did Jamestown have? What type of colony was it at the end, when King James takes over the colony?

Activity: Reader’s Theater Your group will nominate an actor or actress to participate in our Staving Times class play. In your group assign the following roles Director (1): In charge of play rehearsal—you must rehearse in class. Costume Designers (2): Will design articles for the actor to wear. Actor or Actress (1): Will represent your group in the play—he/she must be willing to memorize the play lines. Secretary: Records the group’s progress. ** Be ready to act out the play next week**
