Presentation transcript:

Do you agree that this book is “anti-traveler?” DAILY JOURNAL (28 Nov) “This book is anti-traveler in a lot of ways. That was absolutely my intention. The Beach was meant to be a criticism of this backpacker culture, not a celebration of it.” ~ Alex Garland Do you agree that this book is “anti-traveler?”

LITERATURE CIRCLE In your group, share the notes you took for the 2nd part of The Beach Listen to others’ contributions & feel free to add ideas of your own Add this question to your discussion: What does the term “film tourism” means? Is it positive or negative? Aside from The Beach, which other films can you think of that have led to film tourism?

THE BEACH: FILM CLIPS As you watch the following clip, reflect on your group’s discussion of ‘film tourism’. Why do you think The Beach led to accelerated tourism to SE Asia (Thailand, esp.) while other movies set in ‘paradise’ did not have the same impact? Mamma Mia! (Greece) Eat, Pray, Love (Bali, Italy, India) Midnight in Paris (Paris) Clip: 14:16~16:19 Clip: 37:52~42:37 The Beach caught a zeitgeist: affluent young adults, affordable air travel, internet, ‘safe’ adventure

FILM AS A SOCIAL PHENOMENON The Beach had a significant impact on SE Asia (especially Thailand) through tourism (esp. low-budget backpacking) POSITIVE: Economy, globalism NEGATIVE: Ecology, traditional culture, local inflation, drugs, sex trade Important drivers of ‘film tourism’: The Lord of the Rings (New Zealand), Game of Thrones (N. Ireland), Harry Potter (Oxford, UK), Winter Sonata (겨울연가 – 남이섬), Reply 1988 (응답하라 1988 – 쌍문동)

FILM AS A SOCIAL PHENOMENON With your partner, discuss & list some other films (or novels) that affected (or reflected) society & had an impact beyond entertainment (and excluding tourism) Here are some examples to get you started:

POLITICS & CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

HEALTH & WELLNESS

ECOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTALISM

INTERIOR DESIGN: MINIMALISM
