The objective of this lesson is to teach Digital Footprints The objective of this lesson is to teach students how to create a positive digital footprint while interacting with social media. This interactive tutorial targets NETS Standard 5. Digital Citizenship: Students exhibit a positive attitude towards using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity. Students exhibit leadership for digital citizenship.

What is a positive digital footprint? Your digital footprint is everything on the internet that is about you. This can include a profile on Facebook or Twitter, photographs that you, your friends, or family have posted online. Also anything you have written or that has been written about you, for instance on posts, discussion boards, blogs, or in articles.

Make sure to create a Positive Digital Footprint! What you text matters! Colleges and employers regularly check social media on new applicants. 70% of recruiters have rejected applications based on a social media search. In extreme cases, social media content has been used in court as evidence.

What is Social Media? Social Media refers to the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue. All of these current platforms can be used to promote yourself and your interests in a positive way.

Blogs Blogs A blog is an easy-to-update website or webpage where authors write regular entries in a diary-like format. The most effective and interesting blogs allow readers to engage in conversations with the author and other readers. Compelling content will keep people coming back for more. A steady stream of interesting posts will help you develop a community of loyal followers who regularly read your blog, interact, and give you feedback.

Podcasts Pod casts Podcasting is a way of publishing MP3 audio files on the web so they can be downloaded onto computers or portable listening devices, such as iPods or other MP3 players. Millions of Americans own iPods or MP3 players and have downloaded podcasts from the Web so that they could listen to audio files at a time of their choosing.

RSS Feeds RSS Feeds RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a web content format which, when used with an RSS aggregator, can allow you to alert users to new or exciting content on your website. RSS saves users from having to repeatedly visit favorite websites to check for new content or be notified of updates via email. Instead, article summaries are delivered directly to them. They can choose to visit the websites when the RSS feeds contain summaries that look interesting to them.

Forums Discussion Forums Discussion forums are places for online communities to discuss topics of common interest. Posts are organized into related threads around questions and answers, or community discussions. These forums work like a bulletin board: you post a message and return later to see if people have responded. A forum helps create communities around shared interests.

Wikis WIKIS A wiki is a type of collaborative work space, it's a collection of web pages that encourages users to contribute or modify the content. A simple web interface can help a community collaboratively develop a document or web page, from anywhere. Wikis can be public facing, meaning that anyone can see the content, or only open to a defined community within or across organizations. Wikipedia is one of the most well-known public wikis.

Social NEtwork Social Networks Social networking sites are websites that connect people. In these online communities, people can join (for free) and at a minimum, establish a page with their profile. The most popular, MySpace and Facebook, also have groups, which are feature-rich chat boards for members. A popular professional social networking site, LinkedIn, offers sections for jobs, service provider recommendations, and questions. All allow users to find people they know among the members, or look for other members with similar interests or affiliations. These sites make it easy to establish networks of contacts. to them.

video Video Short videos are used to communicate all kinds of information by way of websites and popular online video-sharing services. YouTube is the most popular video-sharing website. Video is an effective communication tool for reaching our target audiences. Short videos can be produced inexpensively and played on computers and many mobile devices. Video is the communication format of choice for many young people.

Photo Photo Sharing As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Photos make information more interesting and engaging. They make it easier for people to understand your content, especially people with limited English proficiency and those who read at low grade levels. Photo sharing has become a key part of the social media landscape, since photos can now be so easily shared on sites like Flickr and YouTube.

What is an active footprint? An active digital footprint is deliberately created to share information about yourself. It can create an image or “brand” of what you have to contribute to a prospective college or employer. It is intentional – you are controlling the content – and it should be positive by showing-off your accomplishments and contributions to an area, subject, or cause.

Middle School Graphic Artist Join Teen Ink and other websites and contribute your work and find out about competitions and workshops. Use social sharing sites such as Storybird or Glogster to share your work. Research self-publishing sites and pick one that fits to begin to offer your work in a formal manner. Create a blog featuring a daily journal or stories that you want to share. This is a good way to stay active while pariticpating in an 2.0 environment. College Business Graduate Join Linked-In social network to post resume and create a network of contacts. Create a website around a specific business topic researched in school. Feature presentations such as Prezi and Begin a twitter account to build a network and share posts from your website and others. 6 Rules of Social Media Behavior Do not post anything you would not be able to say in front of your parents, teachers, or friends. Never give out personal information, your address, birthday, picture, phone number, location, names or info of people you know. Protect yourself. On the other hand, do use your real name when joining or participating in social media. Your name will help build your profile online. Always pause before posting online and read it back to yourself. Edit, revise, and change until it’s really good, original, with no errors. Be clever with your words. This is how you build credibility. No flaming posts. . . ever. Be selective about what you join. There are thousands of sites out there. Find one that are popular, have security, and are robust in content. Post often to those rather than occasionally to a lot of sites.

The more you post online, the more visible you will be in keyword searches. The Library of Congress has a record of every Twitter post.
