Hormones of the adrenal cortex Hormones of the adrenal cortex. The principal hormones synthesized and released by the adrenal cortex are glucocorticoids (cortisol), mineralocorticoids (aldosterone), and androgens (dehydroepiandrosterone). These steroid hormones are derived from cholesterol. (From Molina PE. Adrenal gland. In: Molina PE. Endocrine Physiology. 2nd ed. New York, NY: McGraw-Hill; 2006:123-156.)
