“Summary” Besides needing tools to increase the gripping, cutting, turning power of the human hand, we also require them to enhance our judgement of the eye and brain. We must be able to make accurate comparisons between different sizes of things and spaces. We also must be able to say accurately just how large an object or space is or how much something weighs. This is especially important when working with engines because a few thousandths of an inch difference between two measurements can have a serious effect on engine performance.

Straight Measurement tools A. Types - Common tape measure, straight rulers B. Uses - Flat surfaces or along straight lines C. Advantages - Accurate - Cheap more...

Straight Measurement Tools D. Limitations - Only for straight or flat surfaces

Feeler Gauges A. Types - Blade Type, Wire Type, and Go, no - go B. Uses - For gaps C. Advantages - Accurate, cheap D. Limitations - Used only for gaps

Calipers A. Uses - Transfers cylindrical or flat measurement to ruler 1. Transfer Type A. Uses - Transfers cylindrical or flat measurement to ruler B. Advantages - Handy for quick comparing, cheap C. Limitations - no graduation, not a measuring device

Calipers 2. Vernier Calipers A. Uses B. Advantages C. Limitations - For precision measurement inside and outside cylindrical or flat objects B. Advantages - Measures to a thousandth of an inch C. Limitations - Expensive, more for machine shop use

Micrometers more... A. Types B. Uses C. Advantages - Inside, outside - Precision measurement of cylindrical or flat objects C. Advantages - More accurate than calipers more...

Micrometers D. Limitations - Expensive, fragile

Telescoping Gauge A. Uses B. Advantages C. Limitations - Transfers cylindrical measurement to micrometer B. Advantages - Small, handy C. Limitations - No graduations, not a measuring device

Volume Measurement Tools A. Types - Graduated cylinders, flasks, cups B. Uses - For finding volume, e.g., the amount of liquid poured in container C. Advantages - Only way to measure irregular objects D. Limitations - Only small objects may be measured

Weight Measurement Tools A. Types - Scales, balances B. Uses - Necessary to measure weight C. Advantages - Portable or fixed D. Limitations - Some are expensive

Dial Indicator more... A. Types B. Uses - Regular, digital - Measures the back and forth movement of parts more...

Dial Indicators C. Advantages D. Limitations - Measures to the thousandth of an inch D. Limitations - Expensive, fragile

Torque Wrenches A. Types B. Uses C. Advantages D. Limitations - Foot lbs. or inch lbs. B. Uses - Measure force applied to nuts and bolts C. Advantages - Accurate, prevents damage D. Limitations - Expensive, fragile

Plastigauge A. Uses B. Advantages C. Limitations - Measures clearance between bearing and journal B. Advantages - Available in different sizes, accurate, cheap C. Limitations - Only measures clearances up to nine thousandths of an inch

Multimeter A. Types B. Uses C. Advantages - Digital, analog - Contains, voltmeter, ammeter, and ohmmeter C. Advantages - Compact, accurate A u V

Horsepower Measurement Tools A. Types - Prony brake, dynamometer B. Uses - RPM and load measuring device C. Advantages - Accurate D. Limitations - Expensive, need formula to calculate horsepower

Spark Plug Gapping Gauge A. Types - Wire, solid metal B. Uses - Measure and adjust the ground electrode of plug C. Advantages - Cheap, handy, accurate 28 25 30 32 40 35
