From: Nonthermal Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) Plasma Suppresses Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) Replication in Corneal Epithelium Trans. Vis. Sci. Tech.. 2014;3(2):2. doi:10.1167/tvst.3.2.2 Figure Legend: Preparation and use of DBD plasma–treated liquids. (A) Setup for generation of nonthermal DBD plasma. Fully insulated electrode receives 15- to 20-kV current alternating at 1.0-kHz frequency. One milliliter liquid is placed into a custom-made glass holder (measurements are shown in inches) (B), such that there is a 1-mm gap between the insulated electrode and the liquid surface. The alternating current ionizes air molecules in the 1-mm gap, producing a characteristic purple glow (inset in [A]). (C) Schematic outline of a typical experiment. The medium is treated by DBD plasma for varying amounts of time (0–120 seconds), depending on the desired potency of treatment. DBD plasma–treated medium is removed from the glass holder and applied to cultured cells or corneas as described in the Methods section.
