STARTER Fractions 200 students study either Geography, History or RE. 1/4 of the students study Geography, 2/5 of the students study History. How many students study RE?

Mum bought 3 sweets. They were 5p each. How much did she spend? How much would she need to buy 5 sweets? If she bought 5 sweets how much change would she get from 50p?

Writing one number as a percentage of the other First write it as a fraction and then multiply it by 100 to turn it into a percentage. Freddie scored 25 out of 40 on his Maths test. What percentage did he get right?

Example: A DVD contains a film and some extra clips. The film lasts 120 mins. The clips after the main film last an extra 30 mins. What % of the DVD is taken up with: (a) the film (b) the clips?

What is ratio? Ratio is a way of comparing amounts of something. It shows how much bigger one thing is than another.

How is ratio written? 4 : 1 This ratio has 5 parts altogether as 4 + 1 = 5. This will be important a bit later on!

Careful, there are three categories here.

Simplifying Ratios The ratio of yellow to green blocks is yellow : green = 4 : 2 Which can be simplified to: 4 : 2 ÷2 ÷2 2 : 1

Number of equal parts = 4 + 3 = 7 A 35 ml orange drink is made by mixing orange juice and water in the ratio 4 : 3. Number of equal parts = 4 + 3 = 7 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 Amount in 1 part = 35 ÷ 7 = 5 ml Orange Juice = 5  4 = 20 ml Water = 5  3 = 15 ml

Number of equal parts = 6 + 3 + 1 = 10 A recipe for pastry uses flour, margarine and water in the ratio 6 : 3 : 1. What weight of each is needed to make a mixture that weighs 300 g?
