All Latin verbs have 4 principal parts. These parts tell you about the verb: what conjugation it belongs to what the perfect stem is how different tenses.

Imperatives! Imperatives = commands A specific person being commanded is in the vocative case! English Imperatives: Latin Imperatives: Stop! cede! cedete! Sit down! sede! sedēte! Be Quiet! tace! tacete!

Forming Imperatives in Latin! Singular Imperatives: (commands 1 person) Latin verbs that end in vowels. ex. veni! = COME!!! sede! = SIT DOWN!!! Plural Imperatives: (commands more than 1) Latin verbs that end in –te (add –te to the singular imperative) ex. cedete! = STOP IT!!! sedete! = SIT DOWN!!!

Negative Imperatives in Latin! Singular, Negative Imperatives (command 1 person NOT to do something) noli + infinitive ** ex. Noli currere! = Don’t run! Plural, Negative Imperatives (command more than 1 person NOT to do something) nolite + infinitive** ex. Nolite clamare! = Don’t shout! **Infinitive – Latin verb forms that end in –re and are translated “to verb”. e.g. Sedere – to sit

Practice!!! Identify each as singular or plural and translate. 1. veni! 2. nolite ambulare! 3. ridete! 4. noli portare! II. Make each singular imperative plural OR each plural imperative singular. 1. clama! 2. nolite perīre! 3. ridete! 4. nolī portāre! Translate! 1. dāte mihi pecunīam! 2. nolite discedere! 3. nolī me punīre!

Imperatives – Latin 2 ONLY! Singular Imperative Formation: 2nd p.p. – the –re ***SAME form as the PRESENT STEM*** (The singular imperative ends in the VOWEL that identifies the conjugation. See pg. 147 in your text for examples.) Plural Imperative Formation: Present Stem + -te** **3rd conjugation verbs form their PLURAL imperatives with -ite and NOT –ete. E.G. “trahe!” becomes “trahite!”
