Iron deficiency anemia Iron deficiency anemia. The PB smear (A, Wright stain, ×1000) demonstrates a hypochromic microcytic anemia. A circulating lymphocyte, present in the center of the image, is available for size comparison. The Wright-Giemsa-stained BM aspirate (B, ×600) shows a normocellular BM with relative erythroid hyperplasia. Erythropoiesis is typically morphologically normal, although some dysplastic features may be identified. The iron stains would reveal absence of adequate iron stores.
