Shailene Woodley as Beatrice "Tris" Prior Shailene Woodley as Beatrice "Tris" Prior. She lives in a futuristic Chicago, the survivors of a mysterious war live in the remains of the city, now enclosed by a large wall. The totalitarian society is divided into five factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent). Tris takes her test and her results show that she is Divergent. Tori records her result as Abnegation and warns her to keep the true result a secret, telling her that since Divergents can think independently and the government therefore cannot control them, they are considered threats to the existing social order.

Tris initially struggles in Dauntless training with low ranking, but slowly improves. Tris‘s divergence allows her to excel at the tests, defeating them in unusual ways, but Four warns her to hide her abilities. One day The Dauntlesses are injected with a serum supplied by Erudite, which is actually a mind control serum but Tris and Four remain unaffected like all Divergents. She manages to enter the central control room and uses the serum on Jeanine Matthews to force her to cancel her program. The group escapes the compound and boards a train, leaving the city.
