Shapes 5.G.B.3

Our Learning Target I can classify two dimensional shapes based on the shapes properties. Repeat after me!

Vocabulary Geometry is usually the lowest category on iReady each year. This lesson is centered around vocabulary. In order to master the rest of the geometry standard you MUST know this vocabulary. We are going to make foldables and charts, so you need to copy down the information!!! You will have a vocabulary quiz on FRIDAY!

Our Goal

Our Goal

2D Shape Vocabulary-pg. 3 1.) Cut around the dark back box. 2.) Glue down only the rectangle that is titled, 2D SHAPE VOCABULARY. 3.) Cut on the dashed lines, so that we can write the definitions under the flaps. 4.) Get your pencil ready!

Definitions Two-Dimensional: shapes on a plane (flat surface) Properties: unique descriptions that help us identify and classify shapes Quadrilateral: a 4-sided polygon with at least one set of parallel sides Angles: the measure of the amount of turn between two straight lines that share a vertex Sides: the straight lines that intersect to make a vertex

Polygons- page 4 Polygons are closed figures made up of line segments. Regular polygons are closed figures made of side with equal length and angles of equal measure.

Examples of Specific Polygons

Classifying Triangles-pg. 5 1.) Cut the dark black box. 2.) Glue the entire figure onto page 5 in your notebook. 3.) Begin to define/draw each triangle.

Triangles 3 sided polygon Triangles are classified by the lengths of its sides. Scalene triangle No sides are the same length Equilateral triangle All sides are the same (equal) length Isosceles triangle At least two sides are the same length.

Triangles 3 sided polygon Triangles are classified by angle measurements. Acute triangle All three angles are acute angles. Obtuse triangle One angle is an obtuse angle. Right triangle One angle is a right angle.

1. 2. You Watch Me 1.) Name the classification for sides. 2.) Name the classification for angles. 2. Isosceles acute triangle; isosceles right triangle

You Try & I will Help Green Yellow

What type of triangle based on the angle measurement You Try Green 74° 45° Yellow 20° 36° Acute Right Obtuse What type of triangle based on the angle measurement

Quadrilaterals- page 6 Four sided polygon 1.) Cut out the largest box, and glue it into your journal. 2.) Give it a title, Quadrilaterals. 3.) Get your pencil ready!

Quadrilaterals- page 6 A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides A rectangle has 2 pairs of parallel sides 2 pairs of opposite sides that are the same length 4 right angles. A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides 2 pairs of opposite sides Kite 2 pairs of adjacent sides that are the same length Trapezoid has at least 1 pair of parallel sides Trapezoid Parallelogram Rhombus Kite Square 2 pairs of parallel sides 4 sides that are the same length 4 right angles Rhombus 2 pairs of parallel sides 4 sides that are the same length Rectangle Square

Use your math journal to answer the following questions. Review-You Try Use your math journal to answer the following questions.

Identify the shapes MOST SPECIFIC Name First 6 12 5 6 6 7 5 5 7 6 12 5 Square, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle

Prove It!!! Can You Hit the Target? Can you classify two dimensional shapes based on the shapes properties? Prove It!!!
