Strategic Goals – performance summary To ensure continued sustainability of the State Diamond Trader The State Diamond Trader has proved itself as a viable commercial operation during the most severe downturn the industry has seen in living memory. With no recourse to public funding, the State Diamond Trader has had to find innovative methods to ensure its sustainability

Strategic Goals – performance summary To be an efficient and professionally managed organization The State Diamond Trader has spent its formative years creating capacity, developing skills and instigating procedures that enable it to establish itself in the diamond industry

Strategic Goals – performance summary To promote and uphold efficient governance All trading practices are controlled by relevant internal policies and procedures that have been externally audited Its annual performance has been audited by the AG and a positive report was issued

Strategic Goals – performance summary To strive for a constant and suitable supply and access to rough diamonds The State Diamond Trader has ensured that it fulfilled its mandate by inspecting over 90% of the diamonds produced in RSA and purchasing approximately 9% by value and volume. The question of suitability has been addressed in research undertaken and impacts on a wider debate on beneficiation

HR capacity and training The State Diamond Trader trained 4 South African youth through: sending them for theory training on diamond sorting and valuing for 6 months employing them as trainees for practical training within the SDT under the supervision of an experienced diamond technical team the resolution was to employ yet another four young people in 2011/2012 financial year, which was done.

HR capacity and training (cont.) In addition, four other young people were in the employ of the SDT and all in training in various sections of the SDT.

Investment in & support for clients The SDT afforded 8 (eight) Small Micro and Medium (SMME) clients the opportunity to exhibit at the annual Jewellex Africa exhibition which took place in July 2010. The exhibition stand was fully sponsored by the SDT. The exhibition stand sponsorship was done again in July 2011 for its clients.

Investment in & support for clients Clients who exhibited were afforded the platform to network and build relationships with downstream markets for their polished diamonds. This confirms the commitment of the SDT to support the growth of its clients and promoting beneficiation of South Africa’s rough diamonds.
