Ionic Bonding and Lewis Dots Checkpoint #1: Atomic Structure Video: Ionic Bonding Classwork: Ionic Bonding Notes: Lewis Dots Classwork: Lewis Dots
Forming Ionic Compounds: Each atom ends up with a full outermost energy level and a charge.
Video: Ionic Bonding The following is a completely normal and boring science video to compensate for the next musical spectacular videos shown previously. Be prepared. http://science360.gov/obj/ video/c8b6ed58-5791-4fc1- 8619- 62fd8d99d9d0/atoms- bond-ionic-bonds
Notes: Ionic Bonding with Lewis Dots This occurs between a metal and a nonmetal. The metal will lose electrons. The nonmetal will gain electrons. A positive and negative ion attract each other and form an ionic bond. The overall charge of the ionic compound is zero.
Classwork: Ionic Bonding Example: You will use Lewis Dots Instead of Bohr Diagrams
Classwork: Ionic Bonding For each reaction, draw it on your white board just like the example. Include the table! Raise your hand when you think you have it. Write the final answer on your worksheet.
Ion Review When an atom loses an electron it becomes a POSITIVE / NEGATIVE cation. When an atom gains an electron it becomes a POSITIVE / NEGATIVE anion. When an ion is formed its outermost energy level is FULL / NOT FULL. Ions form bonds with other ions of the SAME / OPPOSITE charge.
Notes: Lewis Dot Diagrams (copy in your notes) Lewis Dot Diagram: A common, shorthand way to represent valence electrons and bonding. Dots represent VALENCE electrons, but they are drawn around the symbol for the element.
Example: Hydrogen Energy Level Model Lewis Dot Diagram
Example: Carbon Energy Level Model Lewis Dot Diagram
Example: Oxygen Energy Level Model Lewis Dot Diagram
Lewis Dot: Lithium
Lewis Dot Diagram: Aluminum
Lewis Dot Diagram: Nitrogen
Lewis Dot Diagram: Helium
Lewis Dot Diagrams: Elements 1-20 You will use this packet for homework. Lets take a look at the Lewis dots and Bohr diagrams.
Which Elements have 1 valence electron?
Which Elements have 2 valence electrons?
Which Elements have 3 valence electron?
Which Elements have 4 valence electron?
Which Elements have 5 valence electron?
Which Elements have 6 valence electron?
Which Elements have 7 valence electron?
Which Elements have 8 valence electron?
Notes: Drawing Ionic Bonding with Lewis Dots The metal(+) will end up with NO dots. The nonmetal (-) will end up with 8 dots. You must draw brackets around the ion. You must draw the charge outside of the brackets.
