Quick tip A noun always follows the words a, an, or the. However, a noun does not have to follow “a,” “an,” or “the.” A noun can easily appear without any of those word before it. Also, the noun does not have to be the first word after “a,” “an,” or “the.” Other words may be between “a,” “an,” or “the” and the noun.

Examples The turtle is on the sidewalk. An elephant ate the peanut. Cake is delicious. My grandfather is a great person. The new park was built in California.

Let’s practice Identify the nouns in the following sentences. While watching the news, Stacey heard the weatherman say to pack an umbrella. Katie moved to California with her family. The lightning from the storm scared my dog. My mom went on a walk around the neighborhood.

More practice Dad had to run an errand to the hardware store. Lindsey lit a match so she could start the fire. The library received a huge shipment of new books. Dad missed hitting the other car by an inch. The governor pardoned the inmate.
