Goals STFC Accelerator Board Terms of Reference In the context of the national and international activity on accelerator science and technology, the Board will: advise STFC in the development and maintenance of a long-term overall accelerator strategy and on priorities for its accelerator programmes provide regular oversight and review of the existing STFC programme in accelerator science and technology recommend an accelerator investment plan, taking into account the agreed programme priorities, synergies between areas and the long term science strategy consider possible new areas of activity, new collaborations and partnerships, giving advice on their strategic importance and the level of resources required to deliver them advise STFC on the potential applications of proposed and current activities in accelerator science and technology consider and advise on training requirements and opportunities to build capacity in key areas provide appropriate inputs to the STFC’s agreed programme priorities through the STFC programmatic review process or undertake other reviews, as required “consider and advise on training requirements and opportunities to build capacity in key areas”

Economic Context Six out of ten employers are having difficulty recruiting STEM-skilled individuals. Over 40 per cent of employers find that the STEM graduates who they employ lack the right skills. FAS Programmes Fellows Junior Senior Graduate Engineering Training Technician Training Experience Associates Scientific Corresponding Project Students Doctoral Technical Summer Fellows: young physicists and engineers (from junior engineers to post-doctoral research physicists) from member states, normally staying two years. Graduate Engineering Training (GET): Programme introduced in 2009 to leverage engineering training opportunities at CERN. Technician Training Experience : Pilot started in 2012. Similar to the GET but targeted at technician-level (HNC/HND) Scientific Associates: senior scientists spending at CERN up to one year. Corresponding Associates: senior scientists from all but the largest four member states, spending at CERN up to six months. Project Associates: physicists, engineers and technicians sent to CERN by their home institution for periods up to three years (five years for LHC completion). Students: several sub-programmes, catering for different seniority levels (from undergraduates to Ph.D. candidates) and offering different durations (from 2-3 months for Summer Students, up to 3 years for Doctoral Students).

Kevin Sperin – Technical Student Superconducting Magnet Protection - Protecting Superconducting Accelerator Magnets with the New CLIQ System A transition from a superconducting state to a normal conducting state is called a quench. If a quench occurs in a small region of a superconducting magnet, the electrical current flows around this point through the surrounding copper. This causes the copper to get hot and could damage the magnet. To prevent this, we can quench the entire superconductor and cause the current to flow through much more copper. This decreases the energy density in any given point and limits the hot-spot temperature rise. To quench the entire superconductor we can cause an oscillation within the circuit which generates eddy currents (which create heat) directly inside the conductor. This temperature rise triggers a quench once above a certain threshold. This protection method is called the Coupling Loss Induced Quench System (CLIQ) Kevin Sperin – TECH Hi luinosity lhc Current – quench heaters resistive coil outside magnet.
