Do Now: How do we determine distance travelled from a velocity vs. time graph? How far did the object travel in 3 seconds?

Aim: How do we represent the force between charged objects ? They repel due to a force… what affects the size of this force? The charges given to the pith balls and the distance between them. HW: Coulomb’s Law WS (Side 1)

Balloon Demonstration Why do the balloons repel? What is between the balloon that “PUSHES” them apart?

Coulomb’s Law Equation: What equation is very similar to this one? What is this force (Fe)? q1 is charge on object 1 (C) q2 is charge on object 2 (C) r is distance between centers of objects (m) k is electrostatic constant (8.99 x 109 Nm2/C2) Where Fe is electrostatic force between two charged objects (F) Answer the prompt and label the variables… move quick.

Electrostatic Force Graphically Fe Fe q r

Envelope Activity 1. What is the electrostatic force between two protons separated by a distance of 2m? 2. What is the distance between two charges with one having a charge of 5 C and another having a charge of -2 C if the Electrostatic force between them is 5x107 N? How do we show this graphically? F vs. q and F vs. r What happens if I want to know the force acting between more than 2 charges? Example: -5C (y), 4 (0), -7C (x) with distance 3 and 4 m. How do we describe the area around which a force is felt on a charge? What’s the name for this?

White Board Activity Three protons are separated from a single electron by a distance of 1 x 10-6 m. Find the electrostatic force between them. Is this force attractive or repulsive? *Careful with parenthesis! FE = 6.9 x 10-16 N Answer is good…

Coulomb’s Law in 2D Find the net force on sphere B Force and direction of A on B Force and direction of C on B Resultant force A -4C 1.5m B +3C C -8C 3m

Summary Activity What is the resulting electrostatic force if the distance between two objects is doubled? a. F b. 2F c. 4F d. 8F 2. What is the resulting electrostatic force between a charge of -3μC and 6μC if the distance between them is 300 m?
