From Real Live Monsters! By Ellen Schecter Using what you know From Real Live Monsters! By Ellen Schecter

Today, we will … Find out about how we use what we already know to help us understand what we don’t yet know.

Using what you know to work out new meanings The angry chef stabbed his knife into the burnt steak. There were 34 victims in the Lamma ferry disaster. Don’t drink chemicals. They may be poisonous. If you stroke a cat, it may make a purring noise. The Chinese cobra spat out venom after being stepped on. The spider used its fangs to attack the insect. “Would you like a sip of this wine” asked the man. The hummingbird has a remarkable ability.

The Giant Bird Eating Spider

Reading the Text Read each slide in your best reading voices. Guess the missing vocabulary word without referring to their Daybooks. Think of a question to ask other students about their paragraph.

GIANT BIRD EATING SPIDER Real Live Monsters! By Ellen Schecter GIANT BIRD EATING SPIDER MEET THE MONSTER SPIDER: the largest in the world! Its body is nearly 4 inches long. Its leg span is up to 11 inches wide! It weighs almost as much as a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ from McDonald’s!

When it gets scared, this giant makes a purring noise When it gets scared, this giant makes a purring noise. It rises up on its fourth pair of legs to look even larger! Its bite hurts, but isn’t _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ to humans.

This giant eats insects, small lizards, and small snakes (even poisonous ones). It also catches and eats small _ _ _ _ _!

In 1705, Maria Merian _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ a book of paintings she did in the Amazon jungle. One shows a huge spider dragging a hummingbird from its nest. Nobody believed her for 158 years…when another scientist finally saw these spiders killing small birds.

This giant stabs its prey with poison _ _ _ _ _ up to one inch long. Its venom turns the inside of the victim’s body to liquid. Then it sips up the insides. What do you think: M-M-M-Monster Or just eating to live?
