Objectives “Are group-based parenting programs effective in improving maternal psychosocial health?” anxiety, depression, and self-esteem.
Methods Randomized controlled trials with experimental and a control group. Standardized instrument measuring maternal psychosocial health. Electronic databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE CINAHL, PsychLIT, ERIC, ASSIA, Sociofile and the Social Science Citation Index, the Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), and the National Research Register (NRR) Time frame: 1970 – 2002 (update 2003) Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Selection Criteria
Summary 26 studies included in 2003 review 20 studies with data to calculate effect size 64 assessments total 5 outcomes for Meta-analysis
Results Meta-analysis: intervention Groups were statistically significant for depression, anxiety and self-esteem 22% of data showed significant difference between intervention and control group 40% showed non significant differences for the intervention group 1/3 showed no effect
