Numeracy Workshop P1 2017/2018

Mathematics Skills for life – Developing Young Workforce Focus on areas such as: Number (formations, characteristics, amounts, operations, number bonds) Shape (2D and 3D) Measurement Money Information Handling

Our Aim Enhance children’s natural interest in mathematics and build confidence. Build on children’s previous experiences and knowledge. Integrate mathematics into other activities and subject areas. Provide a play-based and exploratory context for maths, encouraging children to solve problems.

Number There is a lot more to number than simply being able to count. We wish for children to experience number in a variety of contexts & environments and have a true understanding of what they represent. Every opportunity at home could be seen as an opportunity to develop number sense and mathematical thinking.

Numeracy Teaching Order Introduce numbers and formations – using a number line and Ten Town characters. Concepts: 1 to 1 correspondence, counting sets of objects, before/after/in between, relationships between numbers (1 more, 1 less), addition stories. Number bonds: 1-10 Subtraction stories.

What does a P1 maths lesson look like? Whole class/group teaching input. Number Talks. Practical activities to practise formation of numbers. Multi-sensory activities and use of concrete materials. Written work in TeeJay workbooks. Cross-curricular links with topic. Maths play and exploration areas in the classroom.

How many ways can you make 10? Number Talks How many ways can you make 10?

Number Talks We can encourage children’s thinking by asking questions such as: What number goes here… How do you know? How far away do you think that is? Which has more? Which has less? Which number comes after? Which number comes before? Can you show me another way? How many do you think there is? How can you know for sure? We can encourage children’s thinking by asking questions such as:

Any Questions? You can see and explore some of our maths resources in the hall at the end of this presentation.
