Migration- Mini lesson day 1 Migration is the movement of people. It is usually a permanent move. This is different from a person/tribe who is nomadic. A nomad moves with the seasons or when the animals move. People who migrate usually move for a longer/indefinite amount of time. Migration usually occurs for one of the following reasons- Social- anything that relates to culture and how people organize themselves into religious, ethnic or social groups. Economic- include poverty, lack of job opportunities and lack of resources. Political-include government, laws, wars, and peoples’ rights. Environmental- include the seasons, changing temperatures, droughts, famine, or catastrophic events. Religious- include persecution due to religion and freedom of religion.

Migration Event Selection You may choose 3 of any of the migration events listed below for your interactive storyboard. Migration- Mini lesson day 2 When migration occurs there are many impacts. Take a few minutes and talk with your table group- brainstorm as many things as you can that you believe would be an impact of people migrating from one location to another. When people migrate they take their culture with them. A few impacts that can be seen occur with cultural diffusion or the spreading of culture traits. For example, when the British settled in North America and created the 13 colonies they brought their culture with them. Today we are still impacted because we speak English which was the same language as the British settlers. Another example, would be the Portuguese creating colonies in Brazil and today the people of Brazil still speak Portuguese.

Migration- Mini lesson day 3 Yesterday, we talked about cultural diffusion- specifically the spread of languages when migration occurs. Another impact that occurs with migration is the changes in population density. When a pull factor such as political or religious freedom pulls people to move to a nation the population increases. Talk at your table group- what are some positive and negative impacts of the growth of population density? Positive: more workers, new ideas, new cultural traits Negative: need more jobs/housing, conflict in cultural groups, not enough natural resources/money Conflicts occur in Germany with the nationals and refugees- not enough housing/jobs and cultural conflicts

Migration- Mini lesson day 4 Last week we looked at the impacts of migration through language, and population density changes. Talk with your table group about the notes that you took as a quick review. When we look at migration we also see that at times it can cause conflicts. Talk at your table group- what are conflicts that might occur when migration happens? Possible conflicts- religion differences, lack of resources/jobs/housing can create stress in a nation and between people groups, different points of view on political and cultural issues Conflicts occur in Germany with the nationals and refugees- not enough housing/jobs and cultural conflicts
