WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION (1701-13) Ultimately a struggle between King Louis XIV of the France and the Habsburg emperor over who got to choose/provide the next king of Spain. The Dutch, many German states, and Britain sought to prevent France from extending its power in Europe (and the reach of Catholicism). War proved politically divisive. The Tories dismayed at the huge sums required to finance a war that, in their view, had nothing to do with Britain. It was a continental affair. But the Whigs supported their war and their political fortunes were tied to British success.

WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION (1701-13) Farquhar sets The Recruiting Officer in Shrewsbury in Sept. 1704, directly after the most famous allied victory in the war: the Battle of Blenheim (13/8/1704). This was seen as a turning point in the War. The allied army, commanded by the Duke of Marlborough, triumphed over the Franco-Bavarian army. Victory led to huge celebrations in England. It was the first major British military triumph on European soil since Agincourt in 1415.

WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION (1701-13) Farquhar a Lieutenant – indeed, a recruiting officer who was actively recruiting in Shrewsbury in 1705-6. So the play is based on his own experience.
