Presentation transcript:

Notes: Vertebrates and Invertebrates 1.) Animals are classified into groups according to how they are related to other animals

2.) Invertebrates are animals that do not have a backbone…97% of all animals are invertebrates!

a.) Some invertebrates are sponges, jelly fish, coral, worms, mollusks (snails), echinoderms (starfish) and arthropods (animals with an outside skeleton)

b. A common arthropod you are familiar with is an insect b. A common arthropod you are familiar with is an insect. All insects have 3 body parts (head, thorax, abdomen) and 3 pairs of legs.   1. Head (antennae) 2. Thorax (3 pairs of legs) 3. Abdomen

Is a Rolly Polly an insect? Is a spider an insect?

c.) Insects belong to the Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Insecta

d.) Complete metamorphosis: Egg, Larva, Pupa, Adult (4 Stages) Examples: butterflies, ants, beetles e.) Incomplete (gradual) metamorphosis: Egg, Nymph, Adult (3 Stages) Examples: Dragonfly, grasshopper, cricket

3.) Vertebrates (also called Chordates) are animals that have a backbone a.)They have an internal skeleton. b.) Some vertebrates are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, bony fish, cartilaginous fish and jawless fish
