Rhyme schemes: The pattern of rhyming lines in a poem To unify a poem To link one concept to another Indicate a change in ideas or concepts (when the pattern changes) Give structure to a theme that is chaotic (sonnet?)

Rhyme Scheme: Identifies which lines in a poem rhyme AABB ABAB ABBA ABAC ABCB

Couplet: two lines one after the other that have the same end rhyme Ex. Once I dive into these pages (A) I may not come out for ages (A) Rhyming couplets

AABB Twinkle twinkle little star A How I wonder what you are A Up above the world so high B Like a diamond in the sky B

ABAB The colors up high A Make something new B The clouds in the sky A Provide a beautiful view B

Quatrains Quatrain: a set of four lines with alternating end rhymes Ex. Mix an onion milkshake, (A) Take a hearty drink, (B) You’ll wind up with a headache (A) Quicker than you think! (B) Quatrains

ABCB Roses are red A Violets are blue B Sugar is sweet C And so are you B

ABBA I am happy to see A You so filled with joy B The happiness of a boy B That fills you with glee A

Internal rhyme: there are rhyming words within the same line Also called embedded rhyme Ex. While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. Internal rhyme

Perfect rhyme & true rhyme Sometimes these are used interchangeably Perfect rhyme: same sound, different spelling and meaning for ex. rain and reign OR bear and bare True rhyme: the final stressed vowel and following consonants are identical ex. sight and fight OR rain and pain Perfect rhyme & true rhyme

Slant rhyme: words that sound similar and may seem to echo each other, but do not really rhyme Ex. bridge and grudge OR shape and sleep Slant rhyme
