Example (similar to ex 3-3) A runway is planned for an airport at elevation 2,300 ft AMSL and average temperature of 92oF. The critical aircraft is a Boeing 737-200. Determine: Runway length for MTOW 100,000 lbs.
Temperature Adjustment = 0.65% per degree F above 59 degrees MTOW 100,000 Runway 6,800 ft 6800x(1+0.65%x(92-59)) = 8258.6 ft Adjusted 8,300 ft

Runway Orientation Based on predominant winds Minimization of crosswinds Winds perpendicular to plane Safety concerns 10-20 knots (11.5-23 mph) Max crosswind function of Airport category (FAA) Runway length (ICAO) Required coverage at least 95% of the time the crosswind is not greater than specified limits.

Wind Data
Wind Data Sources Collect wind data from a reliable source: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Environmental Data Service (EDS) The EDS's National Climatic in Asheville, North Carolina The wind data is usually available for hundreds of stations across the U.S. Carefully use weather record from two or more nearby stations if wind data is not readily available at the proposed airport site (be very careful of local weather effects)
Obtaining Wind Data from National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) Go to http://www7.ncdc.noaa.gov/CDO/dataproduct Select “Global Climate Station Summaries” from the DataSet/Product Options Click “access data” Agree to the terms Select “united states” from country menu, click continue Select State, and click “selected stations in the state”, then continue A list of available stations opens, choose the desired airport, click continue Select date range by specifying the number of years (recommended) or by selecting custom range.
