Problem Solving Strategies Make a Table

Problem You save $3 on Monday. Each day after that you save twice as much as you saved the day before. If this pattern continues, how much would you save on Friday?

Understand What do you need to find? The amount each day if each amount is doubled. What numbers are you given? $3, twice as much What are your key words? pattern

Plan How can you solve the problem? You can make a table. List the amount of money you save each day. Remember to double the number each day. Monday $3 Tuesday Wed. Thursday Friday

Solve Monday $3 Tuesday ($3 + $3) $6 Wednesday ($6 + $6) $12 Thursday ($3 + $3) $6 Wednesday ($6 + $6) $12 Thursday ($12 + $12) $24 Friday ($24 + $24) $48

Look Back Does my answer make sense? The numbers were doubled each day, so by Friday I saved $48 dollars.

Practice Holly checked a book out of the library and read this notice about fines: If a book is 1 day overdue, the fine is 1¢, 2 days overdue, 2¢, 3 days overdue, 4¢, and so on. If Holly's book is 7 days overdue, how much is her fine?

Practice Seth and Bob each began reading a Hardy Boys book today. If Seth reads 8 pages each day and Bob reads 5 pages each day, what page will Bob be reading when Seth is reading page 56?

Practice Jerry was mowing his lawn when he noticed Christy was also mowing her lawn next door. They stopped to talk and Jerry learned that Christy mows her lawn once every 8 days. Jerry mows his lawn once every 6 days. In how many days will they be mowing their lawns together again?
