Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa Anorexia nervosa is a serious, potentially life-threatening eating disorder characterized by self-starvation and excessive weight loss.

Symptoms Dieting despite being thin Obsession with calories, fat grams, and nutrition Pretending to eat or lying about eating Strange or secretive food rituals

WARNING SIGNS!! Anorexia starts of being a simple diet, with a low goal weight. There is a large preoccupation with body appearance, weight, food, calories, fat grams, and dieting. Makes frequent comments about feeling or being fat or over weight. Anxiety of gaining weight or becoming/being fat. Denial of hunger Develops food rituals(e.g. eating certain foods in order). Consistent excuses to avoid meals In some cases excessive amount of exercise In some cases withdrawing from friends and activities Weight loss is the largest concern and focuse of life.

Affection of Anorexia

Treatment Getting back to a healthy weight Starting to eat more food Changing unhealthy thoughts and patterns, about yourself, and food Solving emotional issues

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa Bulimia is a self harming disease, which is harmful for inner organs. It is characterized by a cycle of inappropriate compensatory behaviors (e.g. vomiting) in order to undo the food intake. Their weight is usually normal or over weight, and it can therefore be hard to tell on the appearance if one is struggling with bulimia.

Symptoms Eating an excessive amount of food in a discrete amount of time, a lack of control during this time. Episodes of inappropriate compensatory behaviors (vomiting, diet pills, etc.) Binge eating and compensatory behaviors occur at least twice a week for 3 months. Self-evaluation is very low and is influenced by body shape and weight.

WARNING SIGNS!!! Extreme measures to loose weight (vomiting, diet pills, etc.) Signs of vomiting (swollen cheeks, cuts on the back of the hand and knuckles) Different mood (depressed, lonely)

Affection of the body

Treatment Admitting you have a problem Staying away from people, places, and activities that trigger the temptation to binge or purge Breaking the binge-and-purge cycle Changing unhealthy thoughts and patterns Solving emotional issues

Compulsive Overeating

Compulsive Overeating Compulsive overeating is characterized by uncontrollable eating and consequent weight gain. Compulsive overeaters use food as a way to cope with stress, emotional conflicts and daily problems. They are aware of their eating habits, and are ashamed.

Symptoms Binge eating(uncontrollable eating) Fear of not being able to stop eating voluntarily Depression Low thoughts of one self due to weight/size Constantly dieting Eating little in public, but maintaining large weight Believing to be better when thin Feeling tormented by eating habits Weight is the focus of life

WARNING signs Inability to stop eating or control what you’re eating Rapidly eating large amounts of food Eating even when you’re full Hiding or stockpiling food to eat later in secret Eating normally around others, but gorging when you’re alone Eating continuously throughout the day, with no planned mealtimes

Affects on the body Weight gain Heart diseases Mobility problems Diabetes High blood pressure Shortness of breath High Cholesterol levels

Treatment Managing stress Eating 3 meals a day plus healthy snacking Avoiding temptations to eating Stop dieting Exercise Fight boredom (don’t eat, when bored) Listen to your body (don’t eat if you are not hungry) Keep a food diary Get support from family and friends
