FINDING SCHOLARSHIPS 2017-18 Sponsored by: NCHS Guidance Department And The Advancement Center for Washington Township Schools & North Central Alumni

FINDING SCHOLARSHIPS 2017-18 Susie Bremen Coordinator for College Counseling North Central High School Aimée Rust-Scheuermann Senior Associate Director of Admission Hanover College

Application for Admission … AND Scholarships Automatically considered for Freshmen Scholarships Meet deadlines Might qualify you for additional scholarships

Separate Scholarship Application? Check colleges’ websites for additional scholarships Some colleges will “invite” you to apply Some will post a grid of GPAs and scores needed Some will require an essay

The Scholarship Essay

The 1st Test: Following Directions Some colleges and universities ask that you answer specific questions throughout the course of your essay… What would you like to study? Why? Why are you interested in this school?

Insider Tips Do your research – Show that you are truly informed about a school Do not just repeat what the school’s website or brochures say Make sure the school offers your intended major

Why are you making me write ANOTHER essay??!!! These questions are often unique and not what we’ve already read in response to our admission essay prompts Shows another side of the applicant apart from courses, grades, and test scores Offers the college/university another layer of demonstrated interest

Insider Tips Make sure your essay… Stays on topic Reassures the institution you would be a productive citizen of their community and a good investment of their limited resources Does NOT repeat what we’ve already gathered from your application

Insider Tips Start early – write a couple of practice essays the summer before senior year Take your time – give yourself the opportunity to develop your idea and cross check your work Ask your parents and teachers for their opinion

What’s My Role?

Insider Tips for Parents Many schools require a SEPARATE scholarship application and essay; do your homework in advance! Offer to create a NON ELECTRONIC calendar of dates and deadlines for applications, scholarships, etc. for your student Prepare a “pit crew” for your student (point persons for the essay, letters of recommendation, other questions)

“Outside” Scholarships Sources: Corporations, Foundations, Community Organizations, Parents’ Employers, Banks, etc. Search locally – EVEN AT NCHS! “Google” specific areas: Women in Engineering, STEM, Children of Cancer Survivors, etc.

“Outside” Scholarships

Beware of Scams! Don’t apply for any scholarships with a cost Don’t give your Social Security Number (only on FAFSA) Don’t respond to any letter with a registration number listed Not sure? Ask in Guidance!
