The 1st Test: Following Directions Some colleges and universities ask that you answer specific questions throughout the course of your essay… What would you like to study? Why? Why are you interested in this school?

Insider Tips Do your research – Show that you are truly informed about a school Do not just repeat what the school’s website or brochures say Make sure the school offers your intended major

Why are you making me write ANOTHER essay??!!! These questions are often unique and not what we’ve already read in response to our admission essay prompts Shows another side of the applicant apart from courses, grades, and test scores Offers the college/university another layer of demonstrated interest

Offer to create a NON ELECTRONIC calendar of dates and deadlines for applications, scholarships, etc. for your student Prepare a “pit crew” for your student (point persons for the essay, letters of recommendation, other questions)

“Outside” Scholarships Sources: Corporations, Foundations, Community Organizations, Parents’ Employers, Banks, etc. Search locally – EVEN AT NCHS! “Google” specific areas: Women in Engineering, STEM, Children of Cancer Survivors, etc.

Beware of Scams! Don’t apply for any scholarships with a cost Don’t give your Social Security Number (only on FAFSA) Don’t respond to any letter with a registration number listed Not sure? Ask in Guidance!
