Starter: Watch this short video. In it, the narrator reads another war poem, ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est’, and the video shows a computerised depiction of a battle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en- GB&v=c49tRplMh-Y&feature=related Play the video while taking the register. (3 minutes)

Reading Let’s read! We meet new characters: Osborne Hardy Listen out for quotes that tell us about Osborne. Finish reading page 4-8. (10 minutes) Try to change character readers each day.

Act 1 Scene 1 : What Hardy says about Osborne Pair work: In pairs, read Osborne and Hardy’s conversation again. Write down all the comments that Hardy makes about Osborne. Title your work: Act 1 Scene 1 : What Hardy says about Osborne Be sure to present your quotes exactly as they appear in the play and using “quotation marks”. Pair work (15 minutes) – presentation and accuracy are key.

How does Hardy describe Osborne? ‘You are a fussy old man’ ‘..and you such a quiet, sober old thing.’ ‘Oh you sweet sentimental old darling!’ ‘You know, Osborne, you ought to be commanding this company.’ ‘What a dear, level-headed thing you are.’ ‘You know as well as I do, you ought to be in command.’ ‘God! You are a worker.’ Go through the quotes on the board and discuss the question below. (5 minutes) Students to answer the question in their exercise books. They should respond to both parts of the question and write 2-3 paragraphs. (15 minutes) Comment on Hardy’s view of Osborne. How does that contrast with the stage directions?
