Applying Applications and Windows Updates 10982B Module Overview 12: Maintaining Windows 10 Applying Applications and Windows Updates Provide an overview of the module.

Lesson 1: Managing and Troubleshooting Windows Activation 12: Maintaining Windows 10 Troubleshooting Volume Activation Provide an overview of the lesson. Question What are some considerations for KMS activation? (Select all that apply) (√) Option 1: The activation threshold for Windows 10 is 25. ( ) Option 2: The activation threshold for Windows 10 is 10. ( ) Option 3: Windows 10 computers connect to the KMS host by using port 1433. (√) Option 4: Windows 10 computers connect to the KMS host by using port 1688. ( ) Option 5: The Active Directory schema must be a Windows Server 2012 or newer level to use KMS activation.

Discussion: What Is Activation? 10982B Discussion: What Is Activation? 12: Maintaining Windows 10 15 minutes What is activation? Pose the question and provide an overview of the activation process. If you have an inactivated version of Windows 10, you can demonstrate that many customization features are not available.

Volume Activation Considerations 10982B Volume Activation Considerations 12: Maintaining Windows 10 KMS activation considerations: Client computers attempt to connect with the KMS host every 2 hours To stay activated, client computers renew every 180 days Client computers connect over TCP/IP port 1688 Need at least 25 Windows 10 client computers MAK activation considerations: Recommended for computers that are not on a corporate network, or for environments that do not meet the KMS activation threshold Two ways to activate computers by using MAK: MAK Independent MAK Proxy Active Directory–based activation considerations: You do not need an additional host server Active Directory–based activation is forest wide There are no threshold limits Go through the volume activation considerations with your students. Remind students that 20697-2A module 2; Deploying Windows 10 Enterprise Desktops covers activation in more detail. The focus for this topic is troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting Volume Activation 12: Maintaining Windows 10 KMS activation troubleshooting: Verify that the KMS SRV resource record is present in DNS Ensure that your routers do not block TCP port 1688 Verify that the KMS host has been contacted Verify that the activation threshold has been reached MAK activation troubleshooting: MAK keys have activation limits Ensure that an Internet connection is available Optionally, activate by telephone Active Directory–based activation troubleshooting: Ensure that the computer can contact the domain controller Verify that the computer is domain joined Use this topic to provide guidance on common problems that students might encounter when implementing a volume activation solution. Point out that students should always verify if the Windows operating system is activated. If it is not, then usually they will need to perform standard network troubleshooting steps, including name resolution, network connectivity, and verifying whether they can connect the activation host over the port that they are using.

Lesson 2: Monitoring and Troubleshooting Computer Performance 12: Maintaining Windows 10 Optimizing Disk and Memory Performance Provide an overview of the lesson.
