Diocletian Lewis-Dio Lewis System Historical Presentation

Education: Studied at Harvard where he went into medicine. Life Span: 1823-1886 Education: Studied at Harvard where he went into medicine. Historical Time Period: The Emergence of a Profession. -Toward the end of Era of Muscular Christianity into beginning of the American Civil War. Diocletian Lewis

Dio Lewis System He is best known for creating the Dio-Lewis System. The idea of the Dio-Lewis System was to involve exercise routines that are vigorous enough to raise your heart rate but not as vigorous as the German System which included running, climbing and throwing. The Dio Lewis exercises include: music, social games, and dance routines.

Important to Physical Education Many colleges adopted The Lewis System 1860 Lewis founded the Boston Normal Institute for Physical Education In 1861 he published the first American physical education journals - Gymnastics Monthly - Journal of Physical Culture

Agree or Disagree - I agree with the Lewis System because his idea was to keep people physically active but not trying to be so strenuous on them. People can be active in many different ways. Depending on the type of person, not everyone wants to lift weights to stay fit, some people might prefer to dance or play certain games and that is what Lewis taught America. His system was perfect for people who prefer to do fun activities to stay fit and active.
