Mon 9-12 Aim: How can we assess your drawing and design skills? Do Now: Explain an important art element to drawing a still life Homework: Supplies due today First Sketchbook Due Friday: Using the full space of your sketchbook paper, create a detailed drawing inspired by the work/style of Lorraine Shemesh, using pencil. Due on Friday 9-16.

Sketchbook Inspiration Look at the drawings of Lorraine Shemesh under “Objects” Choose one object to repeat and draw in a pile using a range of values through your graphite pencils. View the objects from tops, sides and bottoms and combine them into one image. Fully shade your objects, don’t use outlines! Due Friday!

Still Life Assessment Draw the objects as you see them. Do no re-arrange them. Try your best to represent the object’s size, shape, texture, value and three-dimensional quality. Use the full space of your paper to compose your image. Use the full period to draw as much as you can. Draw how ever you feel comfortable. Use only the pencil you were given.

Tues 9-13 Aim: How can you improve the composition of your original still life drawing? Do Now: Explain which image is more engaging to you and why. Homework: Using the full space of your sketchbook paper, create a detailed drawing inspired by the work/style of Lorraine Shemesh, using pencil. Due on Friday 9-18.

FOCUS/EMPHASIS Always know what you want the viewer to focus on/appreciate/take away from your drawing BEFORE YOU START. Place that object in an interesting eye catching spot on your paper using the rule of thirds. Let everything else your drawing complement your focal point. RULE OF THIRDS: Divide your surface into thirds horizontally and vertically- place the focus of your painting one third across or one third up or down on the picture plane, or where the lines intersect. (red)

Think about space! Background, middle-ground and foreground- ALWAYS! Overlapping creates interest. When objects just touch each other it distracts the viewer. Either keep things purposely apart, or overlapped. Placement on your paper- have something come off the page completely...have another thing come close to the edge of the paper but not touch the edge, and have something far away from the edge. Background, middle-ground and foreground- ALWAYS! Perspective! Are you going to draw from above, below, or a side? Think about your angles! Lead our eye into your image. Use line! EDIT! Simplify- sometimes too many things gets confusing to the view. Placement: RULE OF THIRDS!

Variety and Interest Incorporate at least THREE things.... Three objects...three different textures...2 things that are the same and one thing that is different... color. Scheme...etc. Are these using effective composition techniques?

Wed 9-14 Aim: How can you choose a final composition from the still life? Do Now: Analyze a sketch from yesterday and decide if it will make a good final drawing. Homework: Using the full space of your sketchbook paper, create a detailed drawing inspired by the work/style of Lorraine Shemesh, using pencil. Due on Friday

Thurs 9-15 Aim: How can you translate your final sketch to final copy paper? Do Now: explain what it means to scale your drawing to fit a larger paper Homework: HW due tomorrow
