Why get an internship? Animal experience is mandatory for vet school Even if it’s a job, externship, internship, volunteering or shadowing….. Its VALUABLE EXPERIENCE

I like ONLY dogs…. Where should I get my internship???? Do NOT define your internship search on your interests Vet schools want to know that you have had a variety of substantial hours working with a variety of animals Small animal Large animal Exotics (Zoo/Aquatic) They can vary in hours, but make sure your favorite animal group has your most hours!

Can my internships not include animals? Yes!!!!!!! Get involved in a research lab, ASAP! What might be volunteering in lab washing dishes one day could lead to a D.U.R.

The most important thing to remember is… WRITE DOWN ALL YOUR HOURS, WHAT YOU DID/LEARNED DURING THOSE HOURS!!!!! You will need to write down these hours (Hours/week) and descriptions for your VMCAS This list can go back all the way back to middle school if you started volunteering in a shelter Write down hours and descriptions of these TONIGHT if you remember them

Start with the UVM Animal Science page: http://asci.uvm.edu/intern/ The side column will have all of the types of internship categories with all types of animals and places you can explore! Contact Fran if you wish to receive credit for the internship BEFORE STARTING!!!!!!

Resumes! When submitting your resume to apply for a position list your experiences in order of pertinence to the internship Ex. A Small animal Internship My resume would list off any other small animal experience that I have before any other experiences Employment on resumes is important but list accordingly When listing personal attributes, make sure they can be connected to the field If your resume is over 1 page double sided, take out unrelated experiences like sports that may not help you Don’t forget to include any scholarships, awards, or Dean’s lists you have made!

Don’t forget! Interviews: Be yourself while being professional Business casual to Business formal depending on location Bring extra copies of your resume (and cover letter if needed) Be yourself while being professional Apply to many different places, you might not get into your first choice Search other places besides the ASCI website for internships, but make sure they are legitimate!!! Keep the connections you make at the internships! You will need a letter of reference from one or more of your supervisors… especially a vet! Start now! You need a lot of hours and variety of experiences while still keeping your head afloat in school work!
