To start... What is external communications? Getting the word out Promoting our organization Why is it important? Increase awareness/visibility of CKI Most important, how do you use external communications? To represent our organization!

Example - Press Releases What is it? an official public statement issued to news sources, providing information on a particular event or organizational change Why is it important? used to showcase CKI and your home club or division’s event! a professional means to make a public statement on media sources

Structure of Press Releases Let’s take a look at a basic template, which can also be found on our District CNH KB! Important Parts Official Header Contact Info “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE” Catchy Headline City and date of event Boilerplate ### to indicate ending

Timeline of Process Start crafting it roughly 3-4 weeks before your event/announcement Find the template via our KB online! Fill out our Google Form to request help from the District PR Committee Allow time for feedback/review from leaders, LTGs, presidents, advisor, etc. Locate local media sources & send out email request 2-3 weeks prior to event Send follow-up email, if no response, 1 week prior to event Within 2 days after the event, update sources on details such as: how much funds raised how many people attended impact made on community

Sourcing Local Outlets Search “Berkeley news outlets,” “UC Berkeley news” Look online at folders/lists sorted by division & region, online newspapers, newspapers, radio stations, school columns...etc Campus outlets → campus communications center, student newspaper Local outlets → community newspaper, LA Times, community radio station
