A baby begins when an egg cell (ovum) is fertilized by a reproductive cell (sperm) to form a fertilized egg. The new egg cell keeps dividing as you mature. These cells begin to differentiate in structure and function.
Uterus – The mother’s womb. At the end of the first week a baby burrows into the lining of the uterus.
Week 2 - a structure grows between the baby and mother’s body called a placenta.
Placenta – Keeps the baby attached to wall of the uterus. Allows for exchanges between the baby’s blood and mother’s blood. Serves as the babies kidneys, lungs, and intestines.
Week 3 – The Umbilical Cord forms. Heart starts beating
Umbilical Cord – Three blood vessels. Where oxygen and nutrients from the mother come through after being filtered by the placenta.
