The Nower Hill High School Symposium a half termly programme of visiting speakers to promote and nourish intellectual and cultural curiosity amongst our community Professor Ling Hao – ‘How Quantum Mechanics will change your life’ Tuesday 31st October 2017 Location: Main Hall 5.00pm – 6.30pm Ticket only Professor Ling Hao is a Principal Researcher at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and a Visiting Professor at Imperial College London. ‘We hear a lot about the mysteries of quantum mechanics these days. In this talk I want to show you that quantum mechanics already has a big impact on your lives, in mobile phones, medicine and IT. In future this impact is just going to grow and grow. To illustrate my message I discuss superconductivity, the mysterious quantum science shown by some materials at low temperatures. It took 50 years to apply quantum mechanics to understand this phenomenon. The next big breakthrough is expected in quantum computing, likely to be a major disruptive technology. In the talk I will introduce SQUIDs, the building blocks for a quantum computer and review where the technology is currently headed. I will also show how NPL is using the new science to provide new super-sensitive measurements, exceeding anything previously possible’ – Professor Ling Hao The evening is free of charge and open to school students and their families, staff, Governors and all other members of the community.
