Higher Education Commission, Pakistan NREN : Pakistan Education & Research Network Number of member institutions connected to PERN : 260 Backbone : 10Gbps planned to 20Gbps by 2017 end (Multiples of 10Gs) Maximum Bandwidth Allocated on PERN: 1.5 Gbps Minimum Bandwidth allocated on PERN : 16 Mbps Average Bandwidth Allocated on PERN : 110 Mbps

Network update Network connection (National) : 20Gbps Commercial Internet Bandwidth with two service providers with different landing stations. Network connection (International) : 1Gbps from TEIN*CC with average utilization of 974Mbps We have planned trainings/ seminars and workshops to engage more PERN Members on TEIN R&E Link. R&E Link Bandwidth upgrade forecasted to 3Gbps by 2018.

Activity update Application activities Events/Meetings PERN in a member of AARNeT Australia for the deployment of eduroam service across Asia-Pacific and Europe in each partnering country. Eduroam is successfully configured in 17 universities of Pakistan. https://admintool.eduroam.pk/ (Deployed admin tool for eduroam). Launch of Pakistan`s First Internet Exchange Point at PERN premises with 8 National telecom carriers including PERN Average Consolidated Traffic Rate up to 4.5Gbps. Average Traffic Volume Per day up to 32 TBytes. Events/Meetings TEIN Network Monitoring Applications Workshop 2015 SANOG29 2017

New Initiations & Future Targets Smart and SAFE Campus Project 17 out of 48 Universities have been completed on SUP 98 Universities have agreed to be part of Safe/ Smart Campus Project. 90 Universities will be completed on Safe/ Smart Campus by October 2018. PERN 3 Initiation by 2017 End By 2018, 400 Universities/ Colleges are expected/ targeted to join PERN By 2018, PERN would be at 80- 90 % Utilization With the deployment of SUP & VDI Project, Universities will required Multiple of 1GE Links. With the current growth rate, PERN may reach 40.8 Gbps in 2025. 10 Gbps last Mile Media would be required to the universities Establishment of 40Gbps/ 100Gbps Backbone Long Haul Transmission Up-Gradation of ADM sites from 10G to 40/100G Bifurcation of Transmission Rings New ADM/OLA Sites Upgradation of complete Core Equipment/ routers. Plans Looking forward to establish Regional and National CSIRTS leading to formation of National Education SOC.
