Goals for Today 3-1 Properties of Rational Numbers- Exploration Commutative, Associative, Distributive properties

Identifying Properties You can remember the properties by considering the everyday meanings of commute and associate. For example, when you commute to work, you go back and forth from home to office. In the same way, the Commutative Property says that numbers can move back and forth. Similarly, the Associative Property describes how numbers may be grouped; that is, how they associate with each other. Identifying Properties (–4)  9 = 9  (–4) B. (–4)  9 = 9  (–4) The order of the numbers changed. Commutative Property of Multiplication The factors are grouped differently. Associative Property of Addition C. 9(31) 9(31) = 9(30 + 1) Rewrite 31 as a sum. = (9  30) + (9  1) Distributive Property = 270 + 9 Multiply. = 279 Add. Distributive Property
