Chapter 16 – Understanding Weather
Weather Patterns. Air Mass Large body of air Has the properties of the surface where it developed.
All Things Weather Wise Weather Instruments, Pressure Systems and Fronts.
20.3 Thunderstorms and tornadoes
FRONTS Fronts When 2 air masses meet density differences keep them separate Front- boundary between air masses 100’s to 1,000’s of miles wide.
Develop and use models to explain how relationships between the movement and interactions of air masses, high and low pressure systems, and frontal boundaries.
Air Masses Large bodies of air formed when a body of air hangs over a region and takes the temperature and humidity from that region.
Meteorology Study of atmospheric phenomena Weather – Current state of the atmosphere.
Thunderstorms and Tornadoes Last Lecture: We looked at severe weather events in the lower latitudes Principal weather event is the formation and movement.
For clouds to form, air must be lifted Frontal Convectional Orographic.
Weather Patterns Air Mass: A large body of air that has properties similar to the part of Earth’s surface over which it develops. Air masses cover thousands.
STORMS STORMS.
Severe Weather.
Tornadoes Spinning Lows. Low Pressure System Warm air has low density and it rises (forced upwards by surrounding denser air) As the air rises it cools.
Air pressure questions.
Severe Storms ThunderstormsTornadoesHurricanes. What are severe storms? They form under very special conditions They often grow our of another, more common.

WEATHER: TOPIC 7. What is an air mass? An air mass is a large body of air in the troposphere with similar characteristics of pressure, moisture and temperature.
Chapter 38 Weather.
Severe Weather (Storms). Air Masses – large body of air with similar humidity and temperature. Classified by surface over which they form. Maritime form.
Warm up  Answer these questions in your notebook: 1. What is the difference between humidity and relative humidity? 2. What are clouds made of? 3. List.
What Causes Weather?. Weather Scientists gather information about: Temperature Water vapor Wind Air pressure.
Storms and the Movement of Air Textbook pages
By. Orlando forte Junmo park.  The type of front that you would see with a thunderstorm is a cold front because when a cold front occurs a mass of cold.
Weather Types. Lightning A bright flash of electricity produced by a thunderstorm thunderstorms.htm.
Huge bodies of air that forms over water or land in tropical or polar regions.
Types of Severe WEATHER and Fronts Objective: Can I use meteorological data to predict weather?
Weather. Making Weather Forecasts  Weather Measurements are Made  Measurements are Put Into Weather Forecast Models  The Models are Interpreted.
AIR MASSES AND FRONTS. AIR MASSES A section of air that has similar characteristics (temperature, weather, humidity, etc.) throughout it from the area.

Presentation transcript:

Frontal Precipitation/weather

Frontal Precip Interactions between air masses. Relative temperature and humidity. As always, must force air to rise The faster the rise, the faster the cooling, and therefore, the faster the precip

Cold fronts

Characteristics of cold fronts Precip at or behind the front itself Heavy precipitation because of rapid rise of air The faster the front is moving, the steeper the incline and the faster the rise/cool

Warm front

Characteristics of a warm front Relatively slow rise of air Low to moderate precipitation Precip in front of the front itself.

OK. How to tie these together

Current weather http://www.weather.com/maps/currentusweather http://www.weather.com/maps/ustemperaturemap https://www.windyty.com/?38.557,-97.635,5

Convectional precipitation Thunderstorms! Thunder, lightning, hail? Hurricanes Tornados ITCZ Remember, winds spiral INTO low pressure cells.

Tornados Associated with intense thunderstorms Extreme low pressure Most – 110mph winds, 250’ across, might go a few miles. Extremes – 300+mph, 2 miles across, might go dozens of miles. No relationship to trailer parks.

Often, multiple funnels “multiple vortex tornadoes”
