Purpose of Work Break down structure The purpose of the work breakdown structure (WBS) is to sub-divide the scope of work into manageable work packages which can be estimated, planned and assigned to a responsible person or department for completion. The WBS is an excellent for quantifying the scope of work as list of work packages and is an essential tool that includes the complete scope of work. The main components of the WBS are Structure Methods of sub-division Numbering or coding system Level of detail Number of WBS levels Roll-up Integrating the WBS/OBS to assign responsibility.

Methods of Work Break Down Structure The WBS structure: There are two methods of presenting the WBS: Graphically in boxes Text indents Vertical WBs Horizontal WBS Method of sub-division: Product breakdown structure Organization breakdown structure (OBS) Department or discipline Supplier Project team or person

Types of Breakdown Structure Cost breakdown structure: project budget: Labour, materials, plant hire etc. Contract Breakdown Structure: Relationship with clients and service providers Location breakdown structure: physical location of work and powers stations Transport breakdown structure: Large loads of transportations and carnage System breakdown structure: A system breakdown which may cut across other breakdown structures, but would be useful when commissioning the product. Project life cycle Structure: Logical sub-division of the consequence of work into project phases Source: Larsen. Erik. W. and Gray, Clifford F. (2011). Project Management. The managerial process.
