Definition An adjective describes a noun or pronoun Adjectives answer one of three questions: What kind is it? How many are there? Which one is it?

Where can you find them? Many times, adjectives come directly BEFORE the noun or pronoun they are describing. Example: blue coat, soggy toast, exciting adjective lesson etc.

What Question are these Adjs Answering? Are aliens attacking the Sea of Japan? Not exactly. But these gigantic blobs are unwelcome visitors from another place. Called Nomura's jellyfish, the wiggly, pinkish giants can weigh up to 450 pounds—as heavy as a male lion—and they're swarming by the millions.

Types of Adjectives There are several types of adjectives: Describers (plain old adjectives) Demonstrative adjectives (this, that, these, those) Proper Adjectives Article Adjectives

Describers Most adjectives are describers - they describe the noun/pronoun. The yellow stinky bus careened down the old dirt road. The yellow stinky bus careened down the old dirt road.

Demonstrative Adjectives this, that, these, those If the word is DESCRIBING a noun/pronoun instead of REPLACING a noun/pronoun, it is a demonstrative adjective. I prefer this brand of ice cream over that brand. I prefer this brand of ice cream over that brand.

Underline the Adjectives The supersize sea creatures—normally found off the coasts of China and North and South Korea—occasionally drift east into the Sea of Japan to feed on tiny organisms called plankton. But now one hundred times the usual number of jellyfish are invading Japanese waters. And local fishermen are feeling as if they are under siege.
