By Amanda Marie Pellegrino De Stijl By Amanda Marie Pellegrino
De Stijl In 1920, the De Stijl movement was introduced by artists and architects of whom were influenced by the “Dada”.
The “Dada” was the first major anti-art movement, which was in revolt against the culture and values which participants believed had supported the beginning of the First World War.
The translation of De Stijl in Dutch translates to “The Style”. Theo van Doesburg, an artist and architect began this movement in 1917 in Lieden.
De Stijl is based on functionalism with an emphasis of clean lines,no surface decorations, and the only colors used are only pure primary hues, and black and white.
“Conceptually provocative yet surprisingly practical methods for organizing space and for achieving visually engaging solutions in screen-based media.” -Jessica Helfand
“Reality might best be expressed as a series of opposing forces —a formal polarity of horizontal and vertical axes and a juxtaposition of primary colors—the author posited a new image of the world, expressed with “a controllable precision, a conscious penetration of reality and exact beauty.” -Jessica Helfand on theosophist M. H. J. Schoenmaekers books
Socio-Economic Influences -Most pieces were impersonal, due to their style. -Because of the strong influence of the Dada artists they were revolting about the aesthetics that were believed to have been the reason for the First World War.
