St Michael’s R.C. Primary School Welcome to our …… Reading Information Meeting October 2017

Aims of our meeting: To inform you about how we teach reading at St Michael’s School To give suggestions about how you can help your children at home

Speaking and listening- model good speaking skills - e.g “ Go play” …….“Please can I go outside to play” Mealtime conversations Books without words to talk through Keep speaking and reading in your first language ! Phonics Follow the letters and Sounds programme which starts in Nursery with listening to different sounds…………… Learning to recognise and write the different sound Learn the name of the letter but it is important to say the sound of the letter- not the name when sounding out eg c_a_t Refer to your Foundation Reading Pack for examples of how each sound should be taught Handwriting We use the Letterjoin scheme which has a website. Each letter starts with a lead in. This prepares the children for joined up writing. Refer to pack for log-in and practise examples. First steps: E. Y. F. S.

Key stage 1 Phonics Start blending consonants at the beginning and ends of words such as cr-a-b, m-i-lk, fr-e-sh, Also includes vowel sounds.. such as p-ai-nt Refer to Phonics handout in the pack. Also learn to sight read tricky words and nonsense words. Phonics screening test will take place in June – a further meeting will take place nearer the time. Reading scheme books Variety of fiction, non fiction, plays, poetry Guided reading higher level books focussing on understanding the story and characters and comprehension

Comprehension: Look the front cover of the book – can you predict what will happen in the story ? Who are the characters ? Discuss the author/illustrator/publisher……….. Do you know any other books by the author ? Read the blurb at the back of the book …….what do you want to find out ? Predict what will happen as you read through the story. Did you like the book ? Why ? Why not ? What was your favourite part ? Why ? Which part was funny? sad ? scarey? How did the characters feel ? What might have happened if ………….? Can you think of a different ending ? Were there any interesting words ? WOW words ! Ask why questions

Reading at school By the end of Year 2 Working towards the expected standard: I can read accurately by blending the sounds that contain the common graphemes for 40+ phonemes I can read accurately some words of two or more syllables that contain the same GPC I can read many common exception words I can read aloud many words quickly and accurately without overt sounding and blending I can sound out many unfamiliar words accurately I can answer questions and make inferences on the basis of what is being said and done in a familiar book that is read to me Working at the expected standard: I can read accurately most words of two or more syllables I can read most words containing common suffixes I can read most common exception words I can read words accurately and fluently without overt sounding and blending ie at over 90 words per minute I can check that what I have read makes sense I can answer questions and make some inferences on the basis of what is being said and done Working at greater depth : I can make inferences on the basis of what is being said and done I can predict what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far I can make links between the book I am reading and other books I have read

Reading at home Let the children see you reading - be a positive role model Read with your child every day –anywhere- share your child’s school library book ! Read a variety of literature : comics, travel brochures, recipe books. Visit a library ? Develop a love of reading.

If a word is difficult : Read the rest of the sentence: what word will make sense ? Look at the picture …...is there a clue to the word ? Use the letter sound to “spell talk “ the word Look for words within a word Look for a rhyming pattern
