These can be categorized into personal advantages and business advantages. Some of the advantages include: Independence, requires less money to start and maintain, flexibility to adapt to changing market demands, and develops enviable reputations for quality and service. As with any undertaking, small-business ownership has its disadvantages, which include: high stress level, high failure rate, lack of undercapitalization, and inability to cope with growth. © 2017 by McGraw-Hill Education. Being a small-business owner means being your own boss. Many people start their own businesses because they believe they will do better for themselves than they could do by remaining with their current employer or by changing jobs. More often, small-business owners just want the freedom to choose whom they work with, the flexibility to pick where and when to work, and the option of working in a family setting. Advantages of Costs Costs Spend less money on wages/salaries, rent, utilities, etc. Use external firms to handle accounting, advertising, and legal counseling Friends and family volunteer time to work on projects Small businesses often require less money to start and maintain than do large ones. Obviously, a firm with just 25 people in a small factory spends less money on wages and salaries, rent, utilities, and other expenses than does a firm employing tens of thousands of people in several large facilities. Rather than maintain the expense of keeping separate departments for accounting, advertising, and legal counseling, small businesses often hire other firms (sometimes small businesses themselves) to supply these services as they are needed. Smaller firms can develop products for particular groups of customers or to satisfy a need that other companies have not addressed. By targeting small niches or product needs, businesses can sometimes avoid competition from larger firms, helping them to grow into stronger companies.
