Passage 1 After reading passage 1 as a class. Think about the following questions. Who shows more “humanity” Grendel or the men? How does Grendel view his mother? What does Grendel mean when he states, “The world is all pointless accident. . . I exist, nothing else”?

Read Read passage 2 from John Gardner's Grendel in pairs. In this novel, Gardner retells parts of Beowulf from the point of view of the monster Grendel.

Pair Answer these 3 questions based upon passage 2: In the beginning of Passage 2, what is significant about the communication between Unferth and Grendel? What was Grendel’s motivation for sparing Unferth’s life after their confrontation in Passage 2? After reading Passage 2, does your perspective of Grendel or Unferth change? Why or why not?
