TEK 9B: Cellular Processes Photosynthesis: The process by which green plants and other organisms use light to synthesize foods (such as glucose) from carbon dioxide and water. 6CO2 + 6H2O + Light Energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2 Reactants Products

Photosynthesis Occurs in chloroplast in only plant cells Used for growth in plants Converts light energy from the sun into chemical energy, which is stored in glucose. One of the most important processes in Earth because it releases oxygen, which is needed for humans and other animals to survive.

Cellular Respiration C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP Cellular respiration is the process that generates most of the energy that our cells use. It breaks down glucose in the presence of oxygen to create carbon dioxide, water, and energy in the form of ATP. C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP Reactants Products

Cellular Respiration Occurs in the mitochondria in both plant and animal cells in the presence of oxygen (called aerobic cellular respiration). Creates energy used in cellular processes. Releases the chemical energy that is stored in glucose.

Cellular Processes Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are related: The products of cellular respiration are the reactants of photosynthesis and vice versa.

Vascular system Vascular System: The way plants transport water and nutrients from one part of the plant to the other parts. It is also known as the transport system. 2 types of vascular tissue: 1. Xylem: Transports water and solutes from the roots UP to the leaves. 2. Phloem: Transports glucose/nutrients from the leaves DOWN to the rest of the plant.

Reproductive system – plants pollinize, fertilize, & reproduce Structure Function Male/ Female Anther  makes pollen  M Filament  supports anther Stigma where pollen lands (“sticky stigma”)  F Style  Tube - pollen to ovary Ovary  develops into fruit Ovule  develops into seed.
